Mit zwei Millionen Besucher:innen jährlich gilt das Festival international de Jazz de Montreal als weltweit größtes seiner Art. Der Begriff "Jazz" wird hier sehr frei interpretiert und lässt Raum für Hip Hop, Pop aus aller Welt und unterschiedliche experimentelle Spielarten - weitab von Orthodoxie mancher Jazzhochschulen. Zudem veranstaltet das Jazzfestival, das dem größten Sportteam der Provinz - den Montreal Canadiens - gehört, übers ganze Jahr Konzerte. Viele davon finden im relativ neuen Stadtviertel Quartier des Spectacles statt, wo auch frankophone, elektronische und Neue Musik niederschwellig erlebbar ist. Im Sommer sind in Montreal die Inseln im Sankt Lorenz Strom beliebt, wo auf Megafestivals internationale Superstars auftreten, während kleinere Veranstalter:innen das Scheinwerferlicht auf verschiedenste Ausdrucksformen rund um den Globus lenken.
