Tributes pour in for Margaret Thatcher

World leaders have been paying tribute to the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who died yesterday in London, aged 87. Thatcher, who held office from 1979 to 1990, was Britain's first female Prime Minister. Despite being an extremely divisive figure, she's credited with reviving the British economy and hastening the end of the Cold War. The current British Prime Minister David Cameron said Thatcher had left an indelible mark on the country. “The real thing about Margaret Thatcher is that she didn’t just lead our country, she saved our country. And I believe she’ll go down as the greatest British peacetime Prime Minister.” A public funeral for Thatcher will be held at St Paul's Cathedral in London on Wednesday next week.

North Korea issues a stark warning to foreigners

North Korea has warned foreigners to leave South Korea, to avoid being caught up in a "thermo-nuclear war". Pyongyang has employed increasingly threatening rhetoric against South Korea and its allies, since the UN Security Council imposed a new round sanctions against North Korea, in response to a nuclear test in February.

Obama makes emotional plea for gun control

US President Barak Obama has delivered an emotional speech on gun control, urging federal lawmakers to pass tough new legislation at an event in Connecticut, near where a gunman killed 26 people at a school last December. Gun rights groups have lobbied hard to stop any tightening of US gun laws. However Obama told the crowd that they must demand action. “We’ve got to believe that, every once in a while, we set politics aside and we just do what’s right. And if you believe that I’m asking you to stand up.”

Thirteen die in a shooting rampage in Serbia

A gunman has gone on a shooting rampage in a village 50 kilometres south of the Serbian capital Belgrade, killing at least 13 people and seriously wounding himself and his wife. The dead are reported to be neighbours and relatives of the 60 year old gunman. The motive for the attack remains unclear.

Kenya swears in its new President

Uhuru Kenyatta has been sworn in as the new President of Kenya, at a ceremony attended by tens of thousands of people in the capital Nairobi. Kenyatta, the son of the country's founder, is due to stand trial at the International Criminal Court later this year, on charges of inciting the deadly violence that followed disputed elections in 2007.

OECD says Slovenia faces severe banking crisis

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development says Slovenia has significantly underestimated the cost of fixing its troubled banking sector, in a new report released today. However the Deputy Secretary-General of the OECD Yves Leterme says Slovenia is not in immediate need of a bailout.
