7 killed in latest Egypt unrest

In Egypt, 7 people are reported to have been killed and over 250 injured when supporters of the ousted President Mohamed Mursi clashed with his opponents and security forces in Cairo. Police used tear gas to drive back the protestors who tried to block a major route through the capital. The clashes came as a senior US envoy visited the country. William Burns said the US was committed to an Egypt that was stable, democratic and inclusive: "despite our concerns about the developments of the past two weeks, we believe that the ongoing transition is another opportunity - following the January 25th revolution - to create a democratic state that protects human rights and the rule of law and that enables the economic prosperity of its citizens."

Mexico arrests drug cartel leader

The Mexican government says it's captured the leader of a major drug cartel. Miguel Angel Trevino Morales is the head of the Zetas group which has been blamed for many of the worst atrocities carried out by drug gangs. The arrest was announced by government spokesman Eduardo Sanchez: "this morning - in the early hours - members of Mexico's armed forces detained Miguel Angel Trevino Morales. He's accused of organised crime, murder, crimes against health, torture, money laundering and illegal possession of arms used by the military, among other crimes."

North Korean ship detained

Panama says it's detained a North-Korean ship sailing from Cuba which was carrying what it described as "undeclared military cargo". The country's President Ricardo Martinelli says the vessel is being unloaded so the authorities can see exactly what it's carrying. Unconfirmed reports have suggested it could be some kind of missile equipment. It was found in containers of brown sugar.

Greek unions hold another strike

Unions in Greece are holding another strike today in protest at government plans to fire thousands of public sector employees. The industrial action is affecting public transport, flights and hospitals. The government has been told to carry out further reforms and reduce its civil service if it wants to receive more bailout funds from international lenders.

Myanmar's President promises more reform

The President of Myanmar Thein Sein has promised to release all political prisoners in the country by the end of the year. He made the statement during his first official visit to Britain where he held talks with Prime Minister David Cameron. A number of reforms have been introduced over the last few years which have led to the easing of international sanctions.
