Muslim Brotherhood leader arrested

Egyptian officials say the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood Mohamed Badie has been arrested in Cairo. A state of emergency is currently in force in the country following a crackdown on the party in which almost 900 people have lost their lives. Analyst Shashank Joshi: “the Brotherhood is an exceptionally hierarchical organisation. And the arrest of Badie along with all of the other arrests suggests that they’re trying to ensure that it can’t formulate a coherent strategy. It’s a dangerous gamble because the organisation becomes more unpredictable and less coherent as you chip away at these upper levels.”

Pakistan court charges Musharraf

A court in Pakistan has charged the former president and army chief Pervez Musharraf in connection with the murder of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. She was killed in 2007 at an election rally. The charges against Musharraf include conspiracy to murder. Prosecutors say he failed to provide enough protection for her. He denies the charges.

David Miranda - the partner of Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald - was held at Heathrow Airport for 9 hours earlier this week under anti-terror laws. In response to claims it had misused its powers,Scotland Yard says the move was "legally sound". In another development, the Guardian's editor Alan Rusbridger has alleged that British intelligence agents forced the newspaper to destroy material it had received from Snowden about surveillance programmes.

The operator of Japan's troubled Fukushima nuclear plant says radioactive water has leaked from a storage tank into the ground. TEPCO said the leak was discovered on Monday. The plant, which was crippled by the earthquake and tsunami in 2011, has seen a series of leaks and power failures.
