Iran resumes nuclear talks in Geneva

Iran is resuming talks in Geneva today with the United States and five other world powers on its disputed nuclear programme... amid cautious optimism for a six month deal that will buy time for a long-term settlement. President Barack Obama earlier urged US senators to hold off from proposing more sanctions against Iran to allow time to complete a deal. Hossein Mousavian is a former advisor to Iran´s new president, Hassan Rohani: "I´m conviced if there are more sanctions this would be a deal killer and definitely Iranians would consider as a hostile reaction to their overtures, the good will they have made with a very comprehensive package."

Egyptian troops die in Sinai attack

At least 10 Egyptian soldiers have been killed and 35 wounded in a car bomb attack in northern Sinai, where security forces are battling Islamist militants. A suicide bomber reportedly rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a bus carrying off-duty soldiers. It´s one of the deadliest attacks in the Sinai since al Qaeda-inspired militants began stepping up assaults following the army's ousting of the Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.

Baghdad hit by deadly bomb blasts

Security and medical officials in Iraq say a spate of bombings in the capital, Baghdad, has killed at least 29 people and wounded over 100 others. The blasts mostly targeted Shia neighbourhoods. Officials say the death toll could have been higher, as the attacks happened on a day declared a holiday by have the government due to heavy rains.

South African rescuers suspend search of workers

Rescue workers in South Africa have suspended their search for dozens of workers buried in the rubble of a shopping mall, which partially collapsed as it was under construction. Three people are known to have died in the accident near Durban, which happened a month after local officials obtained an order to stop work at the site.

New warning on toxic waste

More than 200 million people around the world are at risk of exposure to toxic waste, according to a new report by international research teams. The study was carried out at more than 3,000 sites in nearly 50 countries. The report´s authors say the large number of people at risk places toxic waste in a similar league to public health threats such as malaria and tuberculosis.

JP Morgan Chase in record settlement

And the largest bank in the United States, JP Morgan Chase has agreed to a record $13 billion dollar settlement with US regulators for misleading investors during the financial crisis. It is the largest settlement ever between the US government and a corporation.
