Rising concern over South Sudan conflict

Aid agencies say people forced from their homes by the fighting in South Sudan are in desperate need of help. Tens of thousands of people who've fled the violence in the town of Bor have gathered along the banks of the Nile River with no access to food, clean water or shelter. David Nash is a spokesman for Doctors Without Borders: "the conditions in terms of clean drinking water are desperate now because the Nile is the only source of water. It's water that people are washing in and there are no latrines around here. There's almost no shelter - people are just living under the trees."

10 killed in Somalia hotel attack

In Somalia, the Islamist militant group Al Shabaab says it carried out yesterday's attack in Mogadishu in which at least 10 people died. The explosions happened outside a hotel often used by Somali politicians and foreigners. According to reports, the bomb blasts were followed by exchanges of fire between security forces and the attackers.

30 killed in road accident in India

The death toll from a road accident in India involving a bus which plunged into a gorge after colliding with a truck has risen to at least 30. Local officials say the bus driver lost control of the vehicle after the collision, which happened 150 kilometres northeast of Mumbai. Several people are being treated for serious injuries.

Ariel Sharon's condition deteriorates

Hospital officials say the medical condition of the former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon - who's been in a coma for the last 8 years - has sharply deteriorated. The 85-year old suffered a stroke in 2006. Zeev Rotstein is the director of the hospital where he's being treated: "Ariel Sharon has shown some signs of deterioration with some critical malfunction of some of his organs, including his kidneys. We feel that his situation is critical."

230 migrants rescued off Italian coast

The Italian navy says it's rescued over 230 mostly African migrants from a small boat south of Sicily. Officials say they were picked up in rough seas late last night and that they're being taken to a Sicilian port. Those on board were from Eritrea, Nigeria, Somalia, Zambia, Mali and Pakistan.

Antarctica ship rescue underway

An operation has been underway in Antarctica to rescue passengers from a research ship which has been stuck in the ice for over a week. A helicopter has been airlifting groups of passengers and has flown them to a nearby boat. Over 50 scientists and tourists were on board the vessel.
