Islamic State poses major threat to the US

US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel says the militant group known as the Islamic State is the most dangerous threat faced by the United States in recent years. Speaking at a press conference in Washington, Hagel said IS was more than just a simple terrorist organisation. “They marry ideology, a sophistication of strategic and tactical military prowess, they’re tremendously well funded.” America's top military commander General Martin Dempsey said that while US airstrikes had halted the IS advance in Iraq, the group could only be defeated by striking at their bases in Syria.

Russia defies Ukraine on aid deliveries

Dozens of trucks carrying Russian aid have crossed over the border into Ukraine, after being held up for more than a week, amid a dispute between the two countries. Ukrainian military spokesman Andriy Lysenko told reporters that the convoy had proceeded without permission, calling it a "direct invasion". The trucks are heading towards the besieged city of Luhansk. The Red Cross says it's not part of the convoy in any way.

Death toll soars in Syria

The UN's Human Rights Office says more than 191,000 people were killed in Syria as a result of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad from 2011 through to April this year. Officials say the figure is double that of a year ago and does not include tens of thousands of reported deaths that cannot be sufficiently verified.

US and EU nations discuss resolution on Gaza

The US, Britain, France and Germany are reported to be discussing a UN Security Council resolution, calling for a ceasefire and international monitoring mission in Gaza. The move follows the failure of Egyptian led efforts to end the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. The UN's Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay meanwhile, has criticised the Security Council for not doing enough to tackle such conflicts. “Despite repeated briefings, regarding escalating violations in multiple crises by OHCHR and other human rights mechanisms, there has not always been a firm and principled decision by members of this council to put an end to crises.”

Malaysia mourns MH17 crash victims

Malaysia is holding a day of mourning today for the victims of Malaysia Airlines flight 17, as the first remains from the aircraft, which crashed in Ukraine in July, are returned to the country. The aircraft is believed to have been shot down by a missile, killing all 298 people on board, including 43 Malaysians.

Over 30 die in Egyptian bus crash

Two tour busses have collided near the Egyptian resort of Sharm El-Sheik, killing at least 33 people and injuring over 40. Correspondents say traffic accidents are common in Egypt, due to poorly maintained roads.

The weather

Changeable conditions will continue this afternoon, with the chance of thundery showers, particularly in mountainous areas. Top temperatures will range from 16 to 24 degrees.
