Ukraine and Russia hold talks

Ukraine's president Petro Poroshenko is holding talks today with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at a summit in Belarus. The meeting comes amid ongoing tension between the two neighbours over the conflict between Ukraine's military and pro-Russia separatists. In another development, Kiev says its troops have captured 10 Russian servicemen in the east of the country. Russian military sources say the soldiers crossed the border "by accident".

Austria’s Vice-Chancellor resigns

The Austrian Vice-Chancellor Michael Spindelegger has announced his resignation. He says he's stepping down from all of his roles as deputy head of government, head of the People's Party and finance minister. Spindelegger had been facing growing criticism from within his party, particularly over tax reform. He said he regretted the lack of support he'd received over the issue from his colleagues. It's not yet clear who his replacement will be.

New cabinet expected in France

France's Prime Minister is preparing to unveil a new cabinet following the departure of the economics minister Arnaud Montebourg over his criticism of the government's economic policy. Manuel Valls is seeking to put together his second cabinet in five months ahead of negotiations at home and with his EU counterparts on the country's budget.

TV debate over Scotland’s future

The leaders of the campaigns for and against independence for Scotland have clashed in their final TV debate before next month's referendum. Oil revenues and currency were among the subjects in a heated discussion between Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond and the head of the "Better Together” campaign Alistair Darling. Darling set out why he opposed independence: "the United Kingdom is about sharing risks and rewards with our neighbours. Being part of something bigger gives us opportunity and security as well as our Scottish identity and decision-making. This is a decision for which there is no turning back. But our children and the generations that follow will have to live with that decision." Alex Salmond argued why voters should say yes to independence: "we're a rich nation and a resourceful people. We can create a prosperous nation and a fairer society. A real vision for the people of Scotland. This is our time. It's our moment. Let us do it now."
