EU climate deal reached

EU leaders have reached a deal on climate change with a commitment by 2030 to meet a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels. The binding decision came after heated discussions at a summit in Brussels. The European Council's President Herman Van Rompuy: "it was not easy - not at all. But we managed to reach a fair decision. It sets Europe on an ambitious yet cost-effective climate and energy path. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of mankind." Environmental groups have welcomed the agreement, but say it doesn't go far enough.

UK faces EU bill demand

The EU Commission has ordered Britain to pay an extra 2 billion Euros into the European Union's budget. The request follows a revision of EU data on national income and economic performance of members states over the last 20 years. The British government says it'll challenge the demand. The Netherlands is also facing a large bill, whilst Germany, France and Austria will receive rebates.

Ebola case in New York

A doctor who returned to the US from Guinea where he had been treating Ebola patients has tested positive for the disease. He's been taken to hospital in New York and placed in isolation. The Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, says there's no cause for alarm: "we've been preparing for months for the threat posed by Ebola. We've clear and strong protocols which are being scrupulously followed and were followed in this instance."

Police continue Ottawa investigation

Police in Canada say investigations are continuing into the 32-year old man who shot dead a soldier in Ottawa before storming the country's parliament. They say Michael Zehaf Bibeau acted alone on Wednesday but that they were still trying to find out if he had any assistance in planning the attacks, adding that there was no information linking his actions with the killing of another soldier in Quebec on Monday.

Hong Kong protestors consider proposal

Pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong say they'll hold a vote on whether to accept a government offer to set up a platform to debate constitutional reform. Today marks the start of the fifth week of demonstrations calling for a free vote when Hong Kong chooses a new leader in 2017.
