Bodies and debris found in AirAsia search

The Indonesian navy says search and rescue teams have recovered 40 bodies from the missing AirAsia plane in the Java Sea. Debris has also been found. The discovery was made about 10 km from the aircraft´s last communications with air-traffic control. The plane with 162 people on board disappeared Sunday on its way from Indonesia to Singapore after encountering bad weather. Aviation consultant Alastair Rosenschein: "They should recover the flight deck recorder and cockpit voice recorder fairly quickly and then we´ll have the answers as to what happened. Of course the immediate focus is on recovering the bodies and that is what they´ll be doing with what little light is left."

Confusion over ferry fire survivors

The Italian Transport Minister Maurizio Lupi says it´s not certain how many people are still missing from a stricken ferry off Corfu, with all those on board now evacuated. According to the Italian navy, 80 of those rescued had not been on the passenger list at all. 10 people died in the incident. Five Austrian nationals on board were among more than 400 others brought to safety. Meanwhile reports are coming in that a ship has sent a distress signal off the island of Corfu, because of suspected gunmen on board. According to Greek state TV, the incident involves illegal immigrants.

Kremlin critic given suspended sentence

The Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny has been given a three-and-a-half-year suspended prison sentence for embezzlement. His brother, Oleg, was jailed for the same period in a case seen as part of a campaign to stifle dissent. The brothers were found guilty of stealing around $500,000 from two companies. Navalny, a prominent anti-corruption campaigner, led mass protests against President Vladimir Putin three years ago.

Schaeuble warns Greece

The German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble has warned Greece against straying from a path of economic reform, saying any new government in Athens would be held to the pledges made by the current Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. The warning came after snap elections were called for January 25. Polls suggest that the left-wing Syriza party, which rejects the terms of Greece's euro zone bailouts, will emerge as the strongest party in the election.

Second possible Ebola case in UK

A health worker who´s the first person diagnosed with Ebola in Britain has reportedly arrived at a London hospital from Scotland for treatment after contracting the disease in Sierra Leone. A second health worker is reportedly being tested for Ebola in Scotland after returning from West Africa.

Gmail unavailable in China

It is being reported that Google’s popular gmail email service has become unavailable in China. Analysts say it’s likely to be an attempt by the Chinese government to limit or even ban access to Google’s services there.
