11 killed in attack on French satirical magazine

Police in Paris say 11 people have been killed in a shooting at the office of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. 10 people have been wounded. Witnesses have spoken of sustained gunfire at the office as the attackers opened fire with assault rifles. A source at President Francois Hollande's office says an emergency government meeting has been convened.

Oil price dips below 50 dollars a barrel

Official figures have shown that inflation in the Eurozone has turned negative. According to the latest figures, prices in December were 0.2% lower than the same time the previous year. The fall was driven mainly by the falling price of oil. The move will add to pressure on the European Central Bank to take further action to stimulate the bloc's economy.

Tail of AirAsia plane found

Officials in Indonesia say the tail of the AirAsia plane which crashed in the Java Sea has been found. The tail contains the flight recorders which could give clues as to what caused the disaster which happened at the end of December. No survivors have been found. Bambang Soelistyo is head of the country's search and rescue agency: "today we've succeeded in finding the part of the plane that has been our main focus since yesterday. The tail of the plane has been found and confirmed."

30 killed in bomb blast in Yemen

At least 30 people have been killed and many others injured in a bomb blast in Yemen. The attack happened as people queued up for a police recruitment event in the capital Sanaa. There's been no immediate claim of responsibility. Al Qaeda has in the past claimed they were behind similar attacks.

Shell agrees settlement over oil spill

The Shell oil company has agreed to pay out 70 million Euros worth of compensation to local communities in Nigeria for two oil spills in the Niger Delta in 2008. Part of the payment will be split between farmers and fishermen and the remainder used for projects such as health clinics and schools. Martin Day is a senior partner at the law firm representing the local community's case: "we did a provisional deal just before Christmas and I went over to see the clients. We had a mass meeting of many of them and absolutely unanimous agreement that the deal was a fair and reasonable one. They were absolutely delighted that the deal at long last has been struck."
