France beefs up security after terror attacks

The French government has announced plans to mobilise ten thousand troops, in an effort to boost security, following last week's terrorist attacks. Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian made the announcement earlier today after an emergency cabinet meeting. “This morning, in particular, the President asked the army to participate in the security of sensitive points of the territory because of the extent of threats on the country.” Seventeen people were killed in Paris when gunmen attacked a police officer, a kosher supermarket and the offices of the magazine Charlie Hebdo. Over 3 million people took to the streets across France last night to express their solidarity with the victims, including around forty world leaders.

Croatia to get first female president

Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic is set to become Croatia's first female president, after a surprise victory in Sunday's runoff election. The conservative candidate defeated incumbent Ivo Josipovic by the narrowest of margins, claiming 50.5 percent of the vote. The election took place amid concerns about the economy, following six years of recession.

Divers locate black box from missing plane

Search teams in Indonesia say they've recovered the flight data recorder from AirAsia flight 8501, which crashed into the Java Sea late last month, with 162 people on board. Officials say the aircraft's cockpit voice recorder has also been located but divers have yet to retrieve it. The bodies of 48 passengers have now been recovered, but strong currents and heavy seas are hampering the search.

Pupils return to Pakistan school after attack

Classes have been held for the first time at a school in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, almost a month after more than 150 people were killed there by Taliban gunmen. Aqif Azeem is a 16 year old pupil, who survived the attack. He says he's glad to be back at the school. “It’s been on and off. We have been, you know, remembering the kids, giving them tributes, going to visit friends who were in the hospitals. So it was on and off of sorts but yeah, we are now very much happy that we are back in the institution.”

Foreign ministers discuss Ukraine crisis

The foreign ministers of Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany are gathering in Berlin this evening for talks on the crisis in Ukraine. NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg meanwhile says fighting in eastern Ukraine between government forces and pro-Russian separatists appears to have eased.
