Buhari claims victory in Nigeria

Nigeria’s new president is calling for national reconciliation. Muhammadu Buhari made the statement after winning last weekend’s election over outgoing president Goodluck Jonathan. He also said that Nigeria’s days as a one-party state are over that this election was a major milestone for Nigerian democracy: „You voted for change and now change has come. The people have shown their love for the nation and their belief in democracy.”

Iran nuclear talks continue

Talks between Iran and six major powers over Iran’s nuclear program continue in Switzerland, extending beyond a midnight deadline. The talks are aimed at ensuring Iran cannot build a nuclear weapon in exchange for a lifting of international sanctions against Tehran. British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond:“Well, we have made some very significant progress over the last few days, but it has been slow going as we tackle the last few issues that remain. I’m optimistic that we will make further progress.”

Lufthansa chief visits crash area

The CEO of Lufthansa, Carsten Spohr, was in the French Alps today to thank police, soldiers and recovery teams who have been retrieving human remains and wreckage from last week’s crash in which a co-pilot of a GermanWings flight intentionally flew an Airbus into a mountainside, killing all 150 people on board. Lufthansa owns GermanWings. Spohr said it will take a long time to figure out why the tragedy took place:“We are learning more every day about the cause of the accident, but I think it will take a long, long time for everybody--- all of us---to understand how this could happen.” Earlier it was revealed that co-pilot Andrea Lubitz had informed Lufthansa of a “severe prior period of depression” after taking a break in his training to become a pilot.

Storm causes havoc in central Europe

A heavy late winter storm system continues to cause trouble across much of central Europe. The storm has led to at least nine deaths in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. It has also knocked out power to thousands of homes in Poland, and has disrupted rail service in Bavaria and the Czech Republic.

37 die in Yemen air raid

In Yemen, at least 37 people have been killed at an explosion at a dairy factory. An air strike from Arab coalition warplanes is thought to have caused the explosion. A coalition led by Saudi Arabia began the air campaign a week ago to try and prevent Iranian-backed Houthi rebels from capturing the port city of Aden.

Russia closes Tatar TV station

Crimea’s only Tatar television station has been forced off the air by Russian officials. The station, ATR, had been critical of last year’s Russian takeover of Crimea, which had been part of Ukraine since boundary changes made by Soviet officials in 1954.
