Gunmen storm Kenyan university

At least 15 people have been killed and 65 others wounded after masked gunmen stormed a college in the Kenyan town of Garissa near the border with Somalia. The attackers are reportedly holding Christian students hostage and are continuing to exchange fire with security forces. The Somali Islamist militant group al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Russian trawler sinks in bad weather

The bodies of 54 people have been recovered after a Russian fishing trawler sank in bad weather off Russia's Far Eastern coast. Emergency services say 63 crew members were rescued. The search is continuing in freezing waters for 15 others.

“Progress” in Iran nuclear talks

The Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says "significant progress" has been made in negotiations with six major powers on Tehran´s nuclear programme but more discussions are needed, as talks continue in the Swiss city of Lausanne. White House spokesman Josh Earnest says Iran needs to make serious commitments to the United States and the international community: "Those are commitments related to demonstrating that they have shut down every single path to a nuclear weapon and indicating a clear commitment to cooperating with an intrusive set of inspections."

Austrians die in French Alps avalanche

The Austrian foreign ministry in Vienna has confirmed that two Austrian nationals and an Italian citizen have been killed in an avalanche in the French Alps. A third Austrian is being treated for serious injuries at a hospital in Grenoble.

Military checkpoints attacked in Egypt´s Sinai

Gunmen armed with rocket-propelled grenades have killed 15 soldiers and two civilians in attacks on several military checkpoints in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, defying one of the toughest security crackdowns in the country's history. Militants who support the Islamic State group have carried out similar operations in the region since the overthrow of the Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Heavy fighting in Aden

Heavy fighting is being reported in the heart of the southern Yemeni port city of Aden - the last major foothold of forces loyal to President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.Witnesses say hundreds of Houthi and allied fighters, backed by tanks and armoured vehicles, are involved.

Tikrit retaken from IS militants

The Iraqi government has declared declared victory over Islamic State fighters in the city of Tikrit. The month-long operation to recapture Tikrit has been the biggest launched yet by the government against the jihadists.

Palestinians join the ICC

The Palestinians have formally joined the International Criminal Court, a key step towards being able to pursue Israelis for alleged war crimes. Israel has denounced the move. Palestinian militants will also be open to prosecution.
