Boy pulled from earthquake rubble in Nepal

A teenage boy has been pulled alive from rubble in Nepal's capital Kathmandu, five days after a massive earthquake struck the country, killing over 5500 people and causing extensive damage. Bad weather meanwhile is hampering efforts to get aid and rescue workers to outlying areas. Cecilia Keizer is the Nepal director of the charity Oxfam. “The aid came quite quickly in Kathmandu because it’s accessible, there’s an airport etc. But in the remote areas it’s absolutely very very difficult to get there. Roads are just crashed down and it’s raining also, what’s really worsened the situation as well.

Nigeria frees more women from Boko Haram

The Nigerian military says it's freed dozens more women and girls, who were being held by the militant group Boko Haram at one of its strongholds in the Sambisa forest, in the north east of the country. On Tuesday nearly 300 captives were rescued from Boko Haram camps.

France to probe CAR abuse allegations

Investigators in France say they're looking into allegations that French soldiers were involved in sexually abusing children in the Central African Republic. A leaked report commissioned by the UN, claims that orphaned children as young as nine were abused between December 2013 and July 2014. UN worker Anders Kompass says he handed the document over to France because the UN had failed to act. Farhan Haq is a UN spokesman. “Any issue of sexual exploitation, of sexual abuse, is a serious issue. This is something that the Secretary General takes very seriously and the UN system as a whole wants to see addressed. This is one where our office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights had in fact been looking into it and trying to keep people apprised.”

Greece presents new bailout reform plan

Greece is expected to submit a new list of reform proposals, at talks today with its creditors in Brussels, as it seeks to unlock billions of euros of bailout funds, before its next repayment to the International Monetary Fund on May 12. The Greek government has signalled that it is prepared to make major concessions, including reforms to pensions and taxation and the sale of state assets.

Parade marks Vietnam War anniversary

A huge military parade has been held in the Vietnamese capital Ho Chi Minh City to mark the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. On this day in 1975 troops from communist North Vietnam captured Ho Chi Minh City, which was then known as Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. The conflict claimed at least 3 million Vietnamese lives and drew in other countries including the United States.

Demonstrations in US against police killings

More than 60 people were arrested overnight in New York City, during a protest against the recent killing of black men by US police. It follows the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who suffered fatal injuries after being detained by police in Baltimore. Baltimore was reportedly quiet overnight, and remains under curfew.

The Weather

Generally overcast conditions will continue this afternoon with some showers, especially in western Austria. Top temperatures will range from 8 to 18 degrees.
