In an interview, Obama said Africa had huge potential: "despite its many challenges, Africa is a place of incredible dynamism, some of the fastest growing markets in the world, extraordinary people, extraordinary resilience. And it has the potential to be the next centre of global economic growth. "

Malaria vaccine gets positive response

The European Medicines Agency has given a positive response to a new malaria vaccine after assessing the drug. Malaria kills nearly 600,000 people a year, most of them children under five in sub-Saharan Africa. But the drug, called Mosquirix, is only about 30% effective. Dr. Fatoumata Nafo-Traore is the head of the Roll Back Malaria Campaign: "this is a very promising vaccine. It's the only candidate vaccine available today. But the reality is that the level of effectiveness is not that high, but we look at it as an important tool."
