Turkey shoots down Russian warplane

A Russian military aircraft has reportedly been shot down by Turkish jets near the Syrian-Turkish border. The Turkish military says the plane ignored repeated warnings that it was violating Turkish airspace. Russia disputes those claims and says it has dispatched military helicopters to search for two pilots who ejected from the aircraft.

US issues a global terror alert

The United States has issued a worldwide travel alert in the wake of the Paris attacks, warning its citizens of increased terrorist threats from groups such as Al Qaeda, Islamic State and Boko Haram in multiple regions. Nancy Soderberg is a former member of the US National Security Council. “I think people need to recognise this for what it is; which is a global awareness of the fact that there may be copycat attackers there, that there are cells of these ISIS groups that we may not be completely aware of.”

Device resembling suicide belt found in Paris

French investigators say they are examining what appears to be a suicide belt, which was found by street cleaners in the capital Paris. Police say it resembles devices used during the recent Paris terror attacks, in which 130 people were killed.

Suicide bombing claims three lives in Egypt

Officials in Egypt say at least 3 people have been killed and 12 wounded in a suicide car bombing outside a hotel in El Arish in the restive Sinai region. A judge supervising Egypt's parliamentary elections is reported to be among the dead.

Kerry holds talks on Middle East violence

US Secretary of State John Kerry is holding talks with the Israeli and Palestinian leaders today, on a one day visit to the region. Speaking to journalists ahead of his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Kerry said he wanted to discuss ways to restore calm, following the deaths of more than 100 people in a wave of violence over the past two months. “I’m here today to talk with the Prime Minister about the ways that we can work together, all of us, to push back against terrorism, to push back against senseless violence, and to find a way forward.”

Bangkok bombing suspects face court

Two men have appeared in a military court in Thailand in connection with the bombing of a shrine in the capital Bangkok last August that claimed 20 lives. The men have been identified as ethnic Uighurs from western China. A lawyer for the accused says they have been charged with murder and firearms offences but not terrorism.

Controversial Vatican leaks trial begins

Five people accused of leaking and publishing secret documents outlining alleged mismanagement in the Catholic Church are going on trial today in the Vatican. Two journalists are among the defendants. They face up to 8 years in prison if convicted. The trial has been condemned as an attack on press freedom.
