I.S. claims deadly French attack
The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for an attack in France, which resulted in the deaths of a senior police officer and his live-in partner. The officer was fatally stabbed outside his home in a suburb of Paris. The attacker then forced his way inside the family home, where he took the officer’s partner and their three-year-old son hostage. When armed police arrived, they found the woman and her attacker dead.
Orlando shooting becomes political
President Obama travels to Orlando, Florida today to pay his respects to the victims of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. 49 people were killed and dozens injured when Omar Mateen opened fire in the early hours of Sunday at a gay night club. The FBI said that in phone calls during the attack, Mateen, who was born and raised in the U.S. by his Afghan parents, had pledged allegiance to a contradictory jumble of radical groups. But now reports are emerging that the gunman had been a regular visitor to the gay club over a long period – raising questions about his actual motives. Meanwhile the presumptive Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has repeated his call to ban the entry of all Muslims to the United States: “We cannot continue to allow thousands upon thousands of people to pour into our country – many of whom have the same thought process as this savage killer.” Trump’s Democratic rival for the White House, Hillary Clinton, said banning all Muslims was not the answer and Republicans needed to work with her party to introduce stricter gun controls in the United States: “If the F.B.I. is watching you for suspected terrorist links, you shouldn’t be able to just go buy a gun with no questions asked.”
Major endorsement for Brexit supporters
Britain’s biggest-selling newspaper, The Sun, has urged its readers to vote to leave the European Union in next week’s referendum. In a front page editorial, the paper says the E.U. has proved increasingly wasteful and incompetent. The Associated Editor of The Sun, Trevor Kavanagh, criticised the Prime Minister, David Cameron, who supports remaining in the E.U.: “I think that he has made a lot of very serious mistakes and has been weak in his negotiations with the European Union. And I think that that sentiment is shared by a lot of those actually support REMAIN.”
Obesity causing global malnutrition
A new study has shown that rising obesity rates across the world are causing widespread malnutrition. Traditionally malnutrition is associated with starvation but the 2016 Global Nutrition Report says obesity, which affects hundreds of millions of people, also causes them to become malnourished.
The weather
Mainly cloudy with rain showers and thunderstorms in most of the country. The Danube region will see some showers and the odd burst of sunshine. Top temperatures are ranging from 15C to 26 C.
