Donald Trump seals Republican nomination

The billionaire businessman Donald Trump has been officially nominated by the Republican Party as its candidate for the US presidential election. A roll-call vote at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, ensured that Trump had the majority of delegates needed to contest the election against the Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton. Trump says he will win back the White House in November: "Together we´ve achieved historic results with the largest vote total in the history of the Republican Party. This is a movement but we have to go all the way."

Erdogan calls emergency security meeting

The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdongan has convened an emergency meeting of his National Security Council, following Friday´s failed military coup. Turkey has extended its purge of the army, police and judiciary to the intelligence agency, universities, schools, religious authorities and the media. All academics have also been banned from travelling abroad. More than 50,000 people have now been rounded up.

Britain relinquishes planned E. Council presidency

It´s being reported that Britain will relinquish its planned presidency of the European Council, which had been due to start in July 2017, to focus on its negotiations to leave the European Union. In her first foreign trips as leader, the British Prime Minister Theresa May will hold talks today in Berlin with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and with French President Francois Hollande in Paris on Thursday.

France extends state of emergency

The French National Assembly has voted to extend the state of emergency for six months. The move follows last week's attack in Nice in which 84 people were killed and scores injured when a lorry was driven into crowds. Prime Minister Manuel Valls said France must expect more deadly attacks despite precautions taken by his government.

IS releases video of German train attacker

The so-called Islamic State has released a video of an Afghan refugee who attacked train passengers with an axe and a knife in the German state of Bavaria before being shot dead by police. The footage from the group´s Amaq News Agency shows the 17-year-old, who´s been named as Muhammad Riyad, identify himself as a "soldier of the Caliphate". Three people were seriously wounded, while another suffered minor injuries.

Kremlin critic killed in Kiev

A prominent Belarusian journalist and Kremlin critic has been killed in a car bombing in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev. Pavel Sheremet worked for the investigative online news site Ukrainska Pravda. Sheremet came to the world´s attention for his reports about political repression in Belarus. He later worked for Russian television.
