Trump repeats pledge to build US border wall

The Republican candidate for November's US presidential election, Donald Trump, has repeated his promise to make Mexico pay for the construction of a wall along its border with the United States to curb illegal immigration. Speaking at a rally in Arizona, hours after meeting Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, Trump also suggested that millions of illegal immigrants could be deported from the US if he becomes president. “Our message to the world will be this: you cannot obtain legal status, or become a citizen of the United States by illegally entering our country.”

Brazil’s new president calls for unity

Michel Temer has been sworn in as Brazil's new president, replacing Dilma Rousseff, who was ousted yesterday after a nine month impeachment battle. 61 lawmakers voted to dismiss Rousseff, amid allegations that she illegally shifted money between budgets to bolster spending. Speaking in a televised address, Temer called for unity. “This is a time of hope and of regaining confidence in Brazil. Uncertainty has come to an end. It is time to unite the country and put the national interest above the interest of groups.”

Violent protests erupt after elections in Gabon

France's Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault has called on the people of Gabon to respect the result of Saturday's presidential election, amid violent clashes between the security forces and protestors. The protestors accuse President Ali Bongo of rigging the result. Last night soldiers stormed the headquarters of defeated candidate Jean Ping. Ping says at least 2 people have been killed in the unrest.

Apple boss hits back at EU over tax ruling

Apple CEO Tim Cook has strongly criticised a ruling by the European Commission, ordering the technology giant to pay billions of euros in back taxes to the Republic of Ireland. Cook told the Irish broadcaster RTE that he expected the ruling, which he described as maddening and political, to be overturned on appeal. “The EU Commission’s overreach in this regard is unbelievable to us, we’ve never heard anything like it.”

17 dead in airstrikes in Syrian province of Hama

The Syrian military has reportedly launched heavy airstrikes against areas of Hama province captured by opposition groups in recent days. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says at least 17 people have been killed.

Austrian chancellor questions Canada trade deal

Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern has suggested that the EU needs to rethink its free trade agreement with Canada, saying it contains similar problems to the controversial TTIP deal, which is currently being negotiated with the United States. His comments follow calls by Vice Chancellor Reinhold Mitterlehner for TTIP negotiations to be scrapped and re-launched after November's US presidential election.
