Top IS leader killed in US airstrike

The Islamic State terror group says it´s official spokesman, Abu Muhammad al Adnani, has been killed in a US airstrike in Syria. The United States, which had placed a $5 million bounty on his head, said an air strike had targeted him in Aleppo province and the results were being assessed. Adnani was the chief IS strategist and his calls for attacks against the West during Ramadan led to mass bloodshed.

Turkey dismisses cease-fire claim

Turkey has dismissed claims that a cease-fire has been reached with Kurdish rebels in northern Syria. Turkey entered Syria last week to support the fight against the Islamic State, but clashes have since broken out between Turkish and Kurdish forces – both US allies. The Kurdish-backed Jarablus Military Council said it had agreed to a cease-fire following consultations with the US-led coalition.

Trump to meet Mexico´s president

The US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has accepted an invitation to meet privately later today in Mexico City with the Mexican president, Enrique Pena Nieto. During his campaign Trump has described Mexican immigrants to the US as criminals and rapists, and promised to build a wall along the border with Mexico. US political commentator Domenico Montanaro says Trump is taking a risk: "Pena Nieto has said some very harsh things about Donald Trump. He´s said there´s no way that Mexico would build this wall that Donald Trump says Mexico would have to pay for. And he even likened him earlier in this campaign to the likes of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler.”

Thousands more refugees rescued off Libya

The Italian coastguard says it has coordinated the rescue of another 3,000 refugees and migrants in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya. More than 10,000 men, women and children have been rescued in three days. Most are from Eritrea and Somalia, who have taken advantage of the calm weather.

Brazil´s Senate to vote on Rousseff´s impeachment

The Brazilian Senate is expected to vote today to dismiss President Dilma Rousseff, following a nine-month impeachment process. Rousseff, whose Workers Party has governed Brazil for the past 13 years, has denied breaking budget laws. She´s described her impeachment as a coup aimed at protecting the interests of the country's economic elite.
