EU-Canada trade deal back on track

Germany´s highest court has rejected a legal challenge by opponents of a controversial trade deal between the European Union and Canada. More than 125,000 people signed a petition organised by activist groups aimed at blocking CETA, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. Campaigners claim the deal violates democratic principles and will give too much power to multinational companies.

German terror suspect found dead in prison cell

German officials have launched an investigation after a Syrian man suspected of planning a bomb attack on a Berlin airport killed himself. Jaber al-Bakr reportedly strangled himself with his shirt in his prison cell in Leipzig. It´s understood he had been on hunger strike and was under round-the-clock surveillance.

Syria talks to resume in Switzerland

The US Secretary of State John Kerry will meet his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Switzerland on Saturday for renewed talks on Syria, as the bombing of the city of Aleppo intensifies. Kerry broke off talks last week over the offensive. The Russian ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin says Russia regrets civilian casualties: "If there is bombing and some civilians are hurt it´s a very bad feeling that we have. But this is what happens during war."

Trump faces new claims of impropriety

The Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump is facing a wave of allegations by women who accuse him of making unwanted advances, kissing or groping them. Trump´s campaign team has dismissed the accusations. A video shot in 2005 emerged last week in which he made obscene remarks about women.

Italian playwright Dario Fo dies aged 90

The Nobel prize-winning Italian playwright, director and political activist Dario Fo has died at the age of 90. Famous for his cutting political satire, Fo won the Nobel prize for literature in 1997. This year´s prize will be announced today.
