Trump outlines views on presidency

The US President-elect Donald Trump has told people who've been protesting against his election not to be afraid of his presidency. In an interview with CBS News, Trump also said his nominees for the Supreme Court would favour restrictions on abortion and that they would defend the right to bear arms. On other issues, he said he wouldn't seek to overturn the legislation on same-sex marriage and that he would deport or jail up to 3 million illegal immigrants who he said had criminal links: "what we are going to do is get the people who are criminal or have criminal records - gang members, drug dealers - we have a lot of these people - probably 2 million or it could even be 3 million. We're getting them out of our country or we're going to incarcerate." Trump has awarded key roles in his team to Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, who will be his chief of staff and Stephen Bannon, a controversial right-wing media figure who’s been named as his chief strategist.

Officials in New Zealand have warned that the earthquake that struck in the early hours of today and its aftershocks have caused a breach in a dam on the South Island. They say a large amount of water has been released into the Clarence River north of the town of Kaikoura and they've urged residents to move to higher ground. Eleanor Roy, who’s near the epicentre of the quake, says people are extremely concerned about aftershocks: "people are very scared tonight. Everyone's very on edge. Nobody is planning on sleeping very much tonight. "
