Mexico condemns US border wall tax plan

Mexico has reacted sharply to Washington's suggestion that it may impose a 20% tax on Mexican imports to pay for President Trump's planned border wall. The Mexican government says any such tax would make a range of products from avocados to televisions more expensive for American consumers. Earlier, the Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto cancelled a planned summit with President Trump over his demands that Mexico should pay for the wall.

Austrian coalition crisis talks continue

Intensive negotiations which will decide the future of the coalition have resumed. The Social Democrats and the ÖVP are negotiating a range of reforms from education to the labour market. It's not yet clear whether they'll result in a continuation of the government or fresh elections.

Merkel and Hollande meet over EU challenges

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the French President Francois Hollande are meeting in Berlin today to discuss the challenges facing the EU. The implications of Brexit, the Trump administration, the conflict in Syria, the crisis in eastern Ukraine, relations with Russia and the rise of populism are on the agenda.

Events take place to mark Holocaust Memorial Day

Events are taking place around Europe to mark the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp on January 27th 1945. Holocaust Memorial Day is held to remember the 6 million Jews and others who were persecuted and murdered by the NAZIS. Earlier, Auschwitz survivors placed wreaths and flowers at the former death camp in memory of the victims. The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres says anti-Semitism is still a major problem. He said he intended to be "in the frontline of the battle against anti-Semitism and all other forms of hatred."

Chile battles devastating fires

International help has been arriving in Chile to help the country fight the worst wildfire in its modern history. The blazes, mainly in the central region, are being fanned by strong winds, high temperatures and a prolonged drought. 10 people have died in the disaster.

The Weather

Frequent sunshine but with some scattered foggy patches around in Lower Austria and Burgenland. A lively to strong wind in the mountains and in the east. Highs mostly between minus 6 and plus 4 degrees, where there's a föhn wind up to 10.
