Bob Marley wurde am 6. Februar 1945 in Nine Miles, in Jamaika geboren. Er gilt als der wichtigste Vertreter und Mitbegründer der Reggae-Musik und wurde mit seiner Band "The Wailers" ab Mitte der 1970er-Jahre weltweit bekannt. "Buffalo Soldier", "Get, Stand, up", "I shot the Sheriff" oder "No Woman, No Cry" sind ein paar der bekanntesten und erfolgreichsten Songs von "Bob Marley & The Wailers".
Marley konvertierte 1967 zum "Rasta" und wurde neben seiner Bekanntheit als Musiker zu einer der Identifikationsfiguren der Rastafari-Bewegung. 1976 wurde ein Mordanschlag auf seine Frau Rita Marley, seinen Manager Don Talyor und den ansonsten unpolitisch agierenden Bob Marley verübt, den alle Beteiligten überlebten. Als Hintergrund für die Tat gilt der damals geplante Auftritt beim Friedenskonzert mit dem Title "Smile Jamaica", welches von der sozialdemokratischen People's National Party (PNP) in Jamaika veranstaltet wurde.
Nach einer Krebsdiagnose und erfolgloser Behandlung starb er im Alter von nur 36 Jahren am 11. Mai 1981 in Miami, Florida.
