Israel US row over Iran

The US Secretary of State John Kerry has questioned the judgement of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over his stance on Iran's nuclear programme. Netanyahu says a deal which is emerging from international negotiations suggested that the US and other countries were "giving up" on attempts to stop Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons: "there are lot of reasons to worry about the agreement that is being formulated right now. The world powers have undertaken to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. It appears they have given up on this commitment. I am not ready to accept it." John Kerry says President Obama had made it clear that US policy was aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons: "Israel is safer today with the added time we have given and the stoppage of the advances in the Iranian nuclear programme than they were before we got that agreement which by the way the prime minister opposed. He was wrong." Netanyahu is to address the US Congress next week, following an invitation by Republican leaders which has been criticised by the White House.
