Setback for AK Party in Turkey poll

In a major setback for Turkey's governing party, the AK has lost its majority after yesterday's general election and is expected to try and form a coalition. The Party, which is led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, got 41% of the vote in the poll which also saw the pro-Kurdish HDP party securing seats in parliament for the first time. The election result is a blow to Erdogan's plans to change the constitution in favour of a new presidential system. Former AK party politician Suat Kiniklioglu says there were a number of reasons for the party's drop in support: "the primary factor has been President Erdogan's way of governing the country for the last 3 years - especially the increasing authoritarianism, widespread speculation about corruption, the Gezi Park protests and how violently they were suppressed. And on top of that I think there's been a general fatigue with the ruling party."

Climate change on agenda at G7

Measures to tackle climate change and radical extremism are dominating talks on the second day of the G7 summit in Germany. German Chancellor Angela Merkel wants the group to reach an agreement on limiting global temperature rises. The conference will also see talks with the leaders of Nigeria, Tunisia and Iraq which will focus on the threat of extremist groups.

Study sees China climate progress

A new study from the London School of Economics says China's greenhouse gas emissions could start to decline within 10 years. The report says the shift has been partly caused by a commitment to renewable forms of energy in China. Fergus Green is one of the study's authors: "China's emissions have been growing strongly - particularly over the last 13 or 14 years. But what we're seeing in China is a remarkable turnaround that started a few years ago and is now showing up in China's statistics with coal use falling last year and emissions flattening out."

Mexico: President's party to retain power

Election results in Mexico suggest that President Enrique Pena Nieto and his Institutional Revolutionary Party will keep control of Congress. The run-up to the poll was marked by violence with drug cartels being blamed for the deaths of several candidates.

Greece willing to compromise on bailout

Greece's government says it's willing to compromise in its negotiations with its international creditors over the continuation of its bailout deal. A government spokesman said the proposal put forward by Athens was a starting point but that it wanted a solution that satisfied both sides. The bailout programme expires at the end of June.

The weather
