Third Bataclan bomber identified
The third suicide bomber who attacked the Bataclan concert hall in Paris in November has reportedly been identified as a 23-year-old from Strasbourg in eastern France who went to fight in Syria with a group of other young men at the end of 2013. He´s been named as Foued Mohamed-Aggad. Other surviving members of the group, including his brother, were imprisoned on their return.
Trump defends anti-Muslim rhetoric
The leading Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has defended his controversial proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States, in the wake of last week´s mass shooting in California. The Pentagon has warned that Trump´s anti-Muslim rhetoric undermines US national security by boosting the so-called Islamic State. The White House says he has effectively disqualified himself from the race for the American Presidency. White House spokesman Josh Earnest: "It´s morally reprehensible. It runs counter to the constitution and has consequences for our national security. And the problem is that you still have a bunch of Republican candidates who are standing by their pledge to support him for President of the United States if, in fact, he´s nominated by the Republican Party to do so. That´s a problem."
Syrian rebels leave Homs
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says Syrian rebels have begun evacuating the last area they hold in the city of Homs under a UN-backed ceasefire deal reached with the government. The deal means the entire city returns to government control after years of conflict. Homs saw some of the first protests against the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in 2011.
France prepares new text for UN climate talks
As the UN climate talks continue in Paris, France is reportedly preparing to present a new draft agreement on steps to tackle global warming. The French foreign minister and president of the COP21 conference Laurent Fabius says it will be shorter in an effort to reduce the points of contention among delegates from 195 countries.
German neo-Nazi suspect breaks silence
An alleged member of a German neo-Nazi cell has broken her silence two-and-a-half years after going on trial in Munich, apologising for 10 racially motivated killings and expressing regret that she had been unable to prevent them. Beate Zschäpe denies being the only surviving member of the National Socialist Underground or NSU and says she was informed of the murders after they were committed. The group killed 10 people - eight of them Turkish, one Greek and a German policewoman - between 2000 and 2007. It also carried out two bombings and 15 bank robberies.
“Super majority” for Venezuela´s opposition
Electoral officials in Venezuela have confirmed that the opposition has won a key two-thirds majority in the National Assembly, enabling it to challenge President Nicolas Maduro. It won 112 seats in Sunday´s elections, with the ruling Socialists and their allies taking 55.
