Nigeria video shows kidnapped girls

A video released by the Boko Haram militant group appears to show some of the schoolgirls who were kidnapped two years ago from the Nigerian town of Chibok. The video shows 15 girls in black robes identifying themselves as pupils who'd been abducted from their school. Some of those filmed have been identified by their parents. The founder of the campaign "Bring Back Our Girls", Obiageli Ezekwesili, says it must be an important lead: "every lead that has anything to do with our Chibok girls should be exhausted. The parents are anxious. They are anxious to see some action taken on the premise of what they saw in the video."

Ukraine parliament approves new PM

In a bid to end a lengthy political crisis, the Ukrainian parliament has approved the appointment of Volodymyr Groysman as the country's new prime minister. Groysman, an ally of President Petro Poroshenko, replaces Arseniy Yatsenyuk who resigned earlier this week. Groysman said his new administration was committed to tackling corruption and strengthening ties with the EU.

MEPs approve passenger records measure

Members of the European Parliament have approved a scheme to share airline passenger information that can be used to track foreign fighters heading to and from conflict areas such as Syria and Iraq. The move ends years of wrangling over how to balance security needs and privacy rights.

18 die in crane disaster in China

In China, at least 18 people have been killed by a crane which collapsed in high winds in the province of Guangdong. Officials say it came down on top of a two-storey building made of shipping containers. Many of the construction workers who were inside the building at the time managed to escape.

Chicago report on police racism

An official report has said that the police force in the US city of Chicago is plagued by racism. A task force, set up after a public outcry over police shootings, said the department has alienated the African-American and Hispanic communities by using excessive force. It called for more than 100 sweeping changes to the way the force operates. Gregory Livingston the President of the social justice organisation Coalition for a New Chicago has welcomed the report: "the great thing about this document coming out is that we can raise consciousness. So now that we have identified the severity of the disease, we must do something in terms of finding a cure."

The weather

Changeable and windy. Some more rain showers on the northern side of the Alps, elsewhere it should be dry. Many areas will have a bit of sun. Highs are ranging between 8 and 18 degrees.
