Gove to stand for UK PM

In Britain, the contest to be the leader of the governing Conservative Party and prime minister has been thrown into turmoil by the surprise announcement that the Justice Secretary, Michael Gove, now intends to stand. He led the campaign for Britain to leave the European Union, alongside the former London mayor Boris Johnson - and he had been expected to support Johnson. Johnson is expected to announce his candidacy in the next few moments. Interior Minister Theresa May, who backed the Remain camp, is standing as a unity candidate. She said there must be no attempts to remain inside the EU: “Brexit means Brexit. The campaign was fought, the vote was held, turn-out was high, and the public gave their verdict. There must be no attempts to remain inside the EU, no attempts to rejoin it through the back door and no second referendum.”

No EU referendum for Austria

Austria's Chancellor Christian Kern has said he does not consider it necessary for Austria to hold a referendum on its place in the European Union. Kern said he would hold a referendum on Turkey becoming an EU member, if its negotiations to join end successfully.

During more than 20 years as the mayor of Davao, he supported a shoot to kill policy for suspected criminals.
