1981 erschien das Album "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts", mit dem Brian Eno und David Byrne eine musikalische Vision über ein psychedelisches Afrika entstehen ließen. Kurz danach veröffentlichte die von Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah und Adrian Sherwood gegründete Band African Head Charge ihr Debüt "My Life in a Hole in the Ground". Der Zeit-Ton stellt beide Platten einander gegenüber, die zu prominenten Wegbereitern für experimentelle Club-Musik wurden.
Mit "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" und "My Life in a Hole in the Ground" tauchen wir tief in postkoloniale Popkultur ein. Beide Alben bearbeiten von den USA bzw. Großbritannien aus klangliche Vorstellungen auf Afrika und den Vorderen Orient.
1954 hatte der nigerianische Autor Amos Tutuola den Roman "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" veröffentlicht, der als eine Vorlage für das gleichnamige Album diente. 1981 brachten Brian Eno und David Byrne (von der Band The Talking Heads) es heraus: voll von Fieldrecordings und Samples, arabisch klingenden Rhythmuspassagen und elektronischen Klangmanipulationen, stellte es für Eno, wie er es formulierte, eine Vision über ein psychedelisches Afrika dar.
De- und Rekonstruktionen
Einer, dem das alles andere als ausreichte, war Adrian Sherwood. Kurz vorher hatte er in London sein Studio und sein Label On-U Sound eröffnet, wo er v.a. jamaikanische Musiker produzierte. Einer von ihnen war der Meister-Perkussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah und zusammen gründeten sie African Head Charge, ein bis heute bestehendes Projekt, das wie kaum eine andere Formation Sounds der "Black Diaspora" und der klanglichen Manipulationsmöglichkeiten des Studios auf sich vereint.
African Head Charges Debüt "My Life in a Hole in the Ground", das sich direkt auf Enos und Byrnes Album bezieht, ist eine psychedelische Expedition durch traditionelle jamaikanische und westafrikanische Perkussion, Jazz und Post-Punk, zusammengehalten von Klangästhetiken und Rhythmusverschiebungen der Dub-Musik.
In dieser Zeit-Ton Zeitreise treffen zwei vor fast genau 40 Jahren erschienene Alben aufeinander: ähnliche Konzepte mit recht unterschiedlichen Resultaten. Und beides Meilensteine für Dub, TripHop und Dance-Elektronik.
