Turkey hit in militant attacks
Police in Turkey say there has been a spate of attacks against security forces across the country and on the United States consulate in Istanbul. Officials said the attack on the US consulate this morning was carried out by two women, one of whom has been arrested. That attack followed a car bombing and gun battle at a police station overnight in Istanbul in which one officer was killed and a number wounded. Three suspects were shot dead in that incident. Meanwhile four Turkish policemen and a soldier have been killed in two separate attacks in the south east of the country. Turkey is on a heightened state of alert after launching military action against Islamic State militants in Syria and Kurdish militants in northern Iraq.
Shooting at Ferguson protest
One man is in a critical condition after a shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, in the United States at a protest to mark the first anniversary of the killing by police of the unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. Police Chief Jon Belmar said the man had opened fire on police and was gravely wounded in an ensuing gun battle with officers. “While this is a tragedy for this man and certainly for the officers involved it is truly a tragedy, there is a small group of people out there that are intent on making sure that we don’t have peace that prevails.”
Bomb near Kabul airport
Afghan officials say a suicide bombing near the entrance to Kabul's international airport has killed at least five people. At least fifty people have been killed in a series of attacks in Kabul in the past few days.
South Korea threatens North
South Korea has threatened military retaliation against North Korea after accusing Pyongyang of planting landmines in the demilitarized zone along their border. Two South Korean soldiers were seriously injured in a landmine blast in a de-mined area of the zone last week.
Germany drops treason investigation
Germany's acting chief public prosecutor Gerhard Altvater has dropped a treason investigation against the news website Netzpolitik. He said documents published by the blog detailing plans to step up state surveillance of online communications did not constitute state secrets.
Mexican activist murdered
A Mexican community activist who helped lead efforts to find 43 students who disappeared last year and were presumed murdered has been killed. Police said Miguel Ángel Jiménez was found shot dead near Acapulco.
Greece “near” bailout deal
Greek officials say they hope to conclude negotiations with international creditors by early tomorrow on a new bailout. Greek officials have said they expect the bailout accord to go to parliament for approval by August 18th.
