Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says moves are also underway to draft new UN Security Council sanctions against North Korea. “This morning I held a phone conference with President Obama. We agreed that this provocative act by North Korea is unacceptable and, through the United Nations Security Council, our two nations will lead the international community.”

Emergency declared in California over gas leak

The governor of the US state of California, Jerry Brown, has declared a state of emergency in an area on the outskirts of Los Angeles, because of a massive leak of methane gas from an underground storage well. Tim O'Connor from the Environmental Defence Fund says the leak, which began in October, is an environmental catastrophe. “This leak is really unfathomable. In terms of the size, it’s larger than what we’ve seen really at any point in history in the United States. It’s putting out enough climate pollution every day to equal what about four and a half million cars put out every day.”
